Generally speaking it has all of the necessary components for a historical wargame. The battles themselves are quite hands off, the game focuses on the logistics leading up to a battle and then the calculations are made. It seems reasonably well researched, though it's more of a spreadsheet than an immersive experience as a Roman general\/politician\/powerbroker.However, what leads me to caution others about the game is the extremely poor optimization. The load times are bad, things get kind of choppy and unresponsive, and it just makes the whole experience a drag. You know this game is going to be a time investment to learn, and that poor optimization is going to drag the whole experience down as it aggregates. In this day and age, the discerning wargamer doesn't mind playing a game that could have been made in 1994, but it is expected to run fast and stable. As such, I cannot reccomend this game, unless you are an absolute fanatic of either Roman History or historical wargames.I will happily change my review to a reccommend if they improve the optimization. Until then, stay away, especially at retail price.. Interesting game if you like to learn about the history of the Roman empire. Bought the game, played for three hours and despite an i7 processor and SSD this game ran at a 'steady' 5 FPS making it an unforgettably horrific experience. A pity... because this is a great game with a lot to offer strategy fans. Hopefully will be fixed in the future in which case I'll gladly buy it again, but in this state it's unplayable.. Alea Jacta Est as an idea for a game is a good oneIn execution it needs a lot of workThe game suffers from slow run time and an annoying habit of crashing and at times the game simply doesn't register my commands and i have to click multiple times before it gets the message (although this cold just be the slow runtime)The gameplay could be interesting if I knew what was going on as the tutorial does a very poor job of explaining how battles work and tells you nothing at all about the units (ie what there stats mean, what different units are good for etc)from what i can gather it seems that armies have a power score based on their units and health (possibly morale too) and this combined with the general and terran will determine the outcome of a battle it feels like a more complex and interesting version of the battle system in crusader kings or EU (which is good cause both those games need a better system for battles) and I feel that if I could just figure out what to do (and have the game run well enough to have the chance to do it) It would be very deep and challenging and a lot of fun.As it stands now I wont recommend this game, give it a few months to sort itself out and wait for another steam sale by then hopefully it will be running well enough to be some real fun.. Awesome game if you like Roman History. One of the best roman games i played, and on sale with all dlc its not that pricey. The game is largely about logistics, since you don't personaly fight the battles yourself, but has a lot of strategic depth. It also has just the right about of scripting to keep as acurate as possible to history, without feeling railroaded. However, if your expecting a top notch graphics game, or something more sandbox like, then this is not for you. As for performance, this game has never crashed for me, it lags if your really zoomed out on the map. Alea Jacta Est (hence AJE) simulates Roman-era warfare at a strategic level, and it is probably the best one on Steam.As any good strategy game, AJE is a game of informations, and its brilliance shines the most in how these informations are acquired: unlike other "arcade" games (e.g. Rome Total War 1\/2) the map does not show true data, but just a patchwork of rumors, whose reliabililty depends on factors under the player's control (e.g. own army composition, scouting), factors out of control (e.g. subordinates' skill, or lack of it), and enemy's actions.The game reward thinking and planning: re-routing a marching army is not a trivial task (and rightly so), and plainly wrong assumptions about enemy's intentions could lead to catastrophic consequences (again, just think to Scipius and Hannibal at the Rhone's crossing).Under this regard, the 30days long turns are indeed helpful to make the game more credible, and to add a bit of thrill.Another very nice touch is that pitched battles are not always a necessity (Sun Tzu could not agree more...) and their effective impact on the course of the campaign is for the most a consequence of the campaign strategic plan: again, it is a game of strategy, not of tactics, and subordinates' defeats are just one among factors which must be taken into account when planning the moves (a note about battles: these may happens if armies\/fleets enter the same region, but this fact alone does not guarantee that a pitched battle will happen. Armies' rules of engage, army composition and evasion values, commanders' skills define the chance for a bloody encounter. Since the turn covers 30 days, there may be more encounters, until one side lose its ability to fight or the field commander call the retreat).It goes without saying that supply chains, fatigue, units' cohesion, experience, weather, terrain, etc...are simulated and have a major impact on the campaign's outcome: an army or fleet can literally "melt" even before meeting the enemy, and even the best veterans need to rest and winter in suitable quarters.Compared to military aspects, diplomacy, country management and home politics are quite stylized (also because the game is not a sand-box, and developers evidently chose to "force" up to a certain extent the historical accuracy) but blend well.The choice to follow quite closely history on the one hand opens interesting "what if" options, but on the other gives a good advantage to those knowing the events (which I suppose are the vast majority of such games' purchasers): this is true especially when playing as Rome's enemies.In-game tutorial covers just the basics, but there is also a well-detailed manual, so I would not complain here: if there is a manual, it is supposed to be read.As for the technical aspects, the game features nice graphics (nothing too fancy, but makes the map very easy to read, and this is by far more important than seeing a lot of tiny legionaries and hoplites swinging swords and spears...) and decent score (nothing to be thrilled of, and a bit repetitive on long scenarios); turn processing is a bit slow on low-end computers, even if I play AJE even on a rudimental Celeron N2840 powered, 2GHz RAM netbook.On the bright side, the game is remarkably stable on Win10Overall AJE (and its expansions) is a great game, which could make the player lose track of time (even if there is a clock in the interface, just in case :) ) and capable of huge satisfactions. My 1st ever Ageod game. I remeber buying the DVD version of it (those were the days!) playing thru the tutorial, a big WTF and then I didnt touch it for 3 years. Then I got somehow back into it, checked the amazing Ageod forums and became a lifelong addict to anything Ageod ever released. This is the best company for lovers of history ever. You will feel the pressure that generals back then felt. Dont be discourged by the apparently steep learning curve, check the forums (the BEST gaming community out there) and the youtube videos. Theres an excellent tutorial AAR by Narwahl and Loki that teaches everything as well as an incredibly detailed Chalres Cummings youtube series out there. Once you learn one game, youre pretty much ready to tackle any of these company's games. AJE has a somehow simplified supply\/OOB structutre that makes it the ideal Ageod to start with. Totally immersive, extremely detailed, this is for real hardcore armchair generals ony. But once you get into Ageod, you will barely find the time to play anything else!. Very good game.. Great game if you enjoy obtuse grand strategy kind of like Paradoxs main games. But it is kind of choppy even on a high end system and crashes within an hour every time. If that ever gets fixed get it but it has been forever. Consider their WW1 game intead.
